JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful intern would work under the guidance and mentorship of
the Traveller Men?s Health Development Worker and be expected to be
in TVG offices daily at 9.**Apply on the website**am to 1.**Apply on
the website**pm Monday to Thursday, unless attendance at evening group
work sessions are required as part of this role. TVG operates a travel
payment system for staff that travel from home to groups at a rate 0f
**Apply on the website**cent per mile in line TVG policy.
KEY ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
* Creating and leading men?s community groups across the 4 halting
sites in Cork city.
* Working with the Traveller Men?s Health Development worker to
create events, programmes and training opportunities for Traveller
across the city.
* Working with the Traveller Men?s Health Development worker to
identify and develop leaders in the community to build capabilities,
build trust, and improve self-esteem and confidence within the
community.
* Attending weekly staff meetings, and any other team meetings as
required.
* Working with the Traveller Men?s Health Development to oversee
the successful roll out of the Traveller Men?s Health Strategy.
* Assisting the Traveller Men?s Health Development Work to
increase Traveller men?s participation and engagement with TVG
activities.
* Meeting with Traveller men across Cork to get an understanding of
needs within the community and supporting Traveller men to meet these
needs.
* Representing TVG at committee and inter-agency level meetings.
* Completing training in computer skills, literacy (if needed),
leadership skills, committee skills, and communication and
group-facilitation skills.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
* Lived experience within the Traveller community.
* A strong interest in the human rights and challenging
anti-Traveller racism.
* An understanding of current issues facing Travellers today.
* A strong interest in working within a team.
* A strong interest in group activities.
* An understanding of community development work and the TVG
project.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Past experience in community development work (volunteering or
participating in groups/projects)
* Good communication skills
* Relevant training, education or previous work experience.
* Good organisation skills.
BACKGROUND TO THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
This post is part of a new 3 year pilot program that TVG has
undertaken as a target employment initiative for Traveller men. In
**Apply on the website**, TVG launched a 5 year Strategic Plan to work
with Traveller men to meet the needs of men in the Traveller
Community. The Community Development Intern will be expected to work
closely with the development team to help deliver objectives the team
have identified as part of their strategy plan. The Community
Development Intern will be expected to undergo ongoing training to
up-skill themselves, to help fulfil their duties as a member of the
TVG health development team.
The long term vision for this post is that with ongoing training while
learning all aspects of Traveller Community development on the ground.
This will help the intern to work towards the long term goal of making
themselves job-ready and will have had 3 years paid working experience
in an NGO setting by the end of the contract. A staff induction of the
intern will take place in TVG offices on the first day of employment
where they will be asked to read and agree to adhere to TVG polices in
relation to their employment. A 6 month probation period with apply to
the Community Development Intern?s employment contact with TVG. This
is role is largely funded by the generous support of the Community
Foundation.
